Cleaning Algae and Moss From a Loved One's Headstone
On a shaded, damp cemetery plot, algae, moss, and other organic growth take hold on a loved one's headstone. Across Southern Michigan, that shade and steady moisture are what feed it. At Westfall Power Washing LLC, we lift that growth off the stone with a slow, gentle enzymatic cleaner. Call us at (517) 227-4597, and we'll start bringing the stone back.
The Headstones and Memorial Plaques We Clean
Whatever your family's stone is made of, it gets the same patient, gentle cleaning. Here is how we handle the stones and plaques we see most often.
Marble
Marble is cleaned with our enzymatic cleaner, left on the surface to break the growth down over time. The chemistry does the work, so the stone is never scrubbed hard.
Granite
On granite, we can wet the surface and gently brush it first to loosen heavy buildup, then apply the cleaner and let it work.
Limestone
Limestone gets the same enzymatic cleaner, with soft brushes only and a light water rinse. Nothing about the process puts the stone under pressure.
Memorial Plaques
Flat memorial plaques get the same gentle treatment as an upright stone, cleaned and re-checked across our return visits.
Why Families Choose Us for Headstone Restoration
Trusting someone with a loved one's grave site is personal. Here is what families count on us for.
Gentle on the Stone
Pressure can pit and damage a headstone for good. That is why we reach for a slow enzymatic cleaner and soft brushes instead. The chemistry lifts the growth without ever forcing it off the surface.
Old Stones Welcome
Age is not a problem. Even stones that are a century old can be cleaned and brought back to a cared-for look. We won't promise a brand-new finish the stone can no longer hold.
A Vetted, Insured Crew at the Grave Site
The people standing at your loved one's grave are fully licensed and insured, with workers' comp coverage. Every technician is background-checked and drug-tested, so you know exactly who is doing the work.
Photos So You Can See the Progress
You never have to meet us at the cemetery. We photograph the stone before we treat it and keep you posted by text and email. When the work is done, we send matched before-and-after photos. For families who live far away, that is often what matters most.

How Our Headstone Restoration Process Works
From your first call to the last visit, here is how a restoration goes with our team.
The Free Written Estimate
Reach out by phone, text or our online form, and our office team answers, with a live answering service for backup. For restoration work, we come look at the stone in person. You get a written estimate within two business days, often the same day, with our insurance and workers' comp details included.
Approving and Scheduling the First Visit
Approve your estimate online and you get email and text confirmation. We send a reminder with an arrival window before the first visit, so nothing takes you by surprise.
The First Treatment
At the stone, we inspect the growth, then wet the surface and work it gently with soft brushes where that helps loosen the buildup. We apply our enzymatic cleaner and leave it on the stone to start breaking the growth down.
The Return Visit at Six to Eight Weeks
Headstone restoration is slow and gentle on purpose. Our enzymatic cleaner works on the stone for six to eight weeks, and we come back to check and re-treat as needed. We never blast a stone with pressure.
The Final Rinse and Finish
On a last visit we give the stone a light water rinse if it needs one and take a final look at the result. We are not finished until you've seen the finished stone in your photos and you're satisfied with how it looks.
What Headstone Restoration Costs
We quote every headstone restoration after we have seen the stone, and the price is set in writing before any work starts. What it runs depends on the size of the stone, how much growth has built up, and whether you add yearly upkeep.
| Pricing | Details |
|---|---|
| $450 minimum | $450 minimum; optional yearly maintenance treatment about $100 to $200 depending on stone size. The minimum is the starting floor, with your final number on the written estimate. The yearly treatment is optional, offered after a completed restoration and sized to the stone. |
Headstone Restoration Service Plans for Yearly Care
Once a stone is restored, a little upkeep keeps it that way. We offer an optional yearly visit, booked only after a completed restoration. We schedule it once a year, when we are already out your way. It is a light touch that helps protect the work you have already paid for.
- Headstone yearly maintenance. A light yearly treatment keeps a restored headstone looking cared for.
Our Promise on Every Headstone Restoration
We stand behind the work, and we keep it simple. If something isn't right, let us know within 48 hours of your service, and we'll come back out to make it right, usually the same day or the next morning. No runaround, and nothing for you to chase down.
